All Stars Career Incubator Days Introduce Students to New Careers
All Stars Helping Kids has sponsored four Career Incubator Days (in April 2009, September 2009, October 2010 and October 2011) for our juniors and seniors. In October, we welcomed students from local KIPP schools to join us for a day of learning from Bay Area companies as they talked about the tools needed to pursue various careers. Our students greatly appreciated this opportunity to think about the work world ahead of them and we're grateful to the following corporations for their participation:
| Apple | Environmental Science Assoc. | Merrill Lynch |
| BAWSI | Fenwick & West | Redwood City Council |
| Burr Pilger & Mayer | First Republic Bank | San Jose Mercury News |

The Brin Wojcicki Foundation Helps Launch Eastside's Engineering Program
Our deep thanks go to the Brin Wojcicki Foundation for underwriting the costs of our engineering and computer science program over three years. The populations Eastside serves are dramatically underrepresented in the fields of science and engineering. To address this disparity and help meet the country’s need for workers with STEM skills, we are excited to introduce the Brin Wojcicki Foundation Program in Computer Science and Engineering. You can read more about the courses offered here.
Eastside is excited to have joined the Tipping Point Community portfolio of grantees in 2011. Tipping Point’s mission is to prevent poverty in the Bay Area, and they recognize that Eastside’s work with first-generation college bound youth is critical to making that vision a reality. Tipping Point is providing very generous and much-needed general operating support to Eastside, and also offers its grantees other forms of support such as strategic planning, communications training, legal expertise and more, through their own staff and partnerships with other organizations. We are grateful to benefit from Tipping Point’s innovative and powerful approach
Hewlett-Packard Helps Students in Many Ways
Eastside greatly appreciates HP’s extensive support since the early years of our school.
HP is currently very generously sponsoring two students’ education at Eastside. The
company has donated computers, printers, and other technology as our student body has
grown, including pro bono advice about how to best utilize our equipment. In addition,
HP sponsors Eastside participation in the Street Law program, which teaches high school
students about practical aspects of the law and legal system, inspiring students to consider
careers in the legal field. HP lawyers have taught this course to our freshman class the
last two summers.
Google and eBay Host Field Trips
In the spring of 2011, students in our engineering program took field trips to two Silicon Valley tech giants: Google and eBay. We want to thank both companies for showing our students their campuses and introducing them to the people who make it all work.
At eBay, students met with the CTO and asked questions about the company. They were then paired up with eBay engineers to talk about college and career paths. At the end of the tour, students learned about the Jeopardy-playing computer Watson from IBM Fellow David Ferrucci who was the Principal Investigator on the project.
Blackhawk Network Helps Buy Books
We appreciate the generous donation of $2,000 in Barnes and Noble gift cards for the 2011-2012 school year from Blackhawk Network, which is a company that distributes prepaid gift cards. As Eastside’s student body grows, so does our need for books for our classes. We are grateful for this support.
Students Find the Perfect Dress with Princess Project
For the last two years, Eastside students have taken a field trip to attend an event hosted by the Princess Project. The Princess Project is an organization that addresses the rising costs of attending formal dances (such as proms) by providing high-quality donated gowns and accessories.
Our students tried on dozens of dresses throughout the afternoon in search of the perfect one. In addition to combing through the racks of dresses, they selected matching accessories to complete their looks.
We want to thank everyone at the Princess Project for helping us make our Spring Formal even more magical.
Students Enjoy Concert Celebrating
African American Composers
In January, LaDoris Cordell and Jodi Gandolfi once again organized a concert at Eastside that celebrated the works of African American composers. We are especially grateful to the organizers for directing the donations collected at the door to Eastside’s music program.
Good Tidings Brings Access to the Arts
The Good Tidings Foundation partnered with Eastside to bring our middle school students to the LeRoy Neiman Art Center in San Francisco on a regular basis. During field trips students create watercolors, sculpture, paintings and quiltings. The middle schoolers got a special treat when they had a workshop with artist LeRoy Neiman himself (see the picture at right).
