FROM THE PRINCIPAL

As 2011 came to a close, students diligently prepared for finals and Eastside’s spirit of community service flourished.

Our student community service group, Step by Step, held their annual canned food drive and Toys for Tots collection. In addition to collecting many toys, students amassed 527 pounds of canned food – almost twice as much as last year’s 290 pounds. In addition to collecting food, several students helped distribute food at the Fair Oaks School.

But the spirit of community mindedness goes far beyond what’s captured in our holiday drives. All students give back in some way throughout the year: serving as tutors at our local elementary schools, volunteering at food banks, or mentoring younger children, while others participate in service projects abroad during the summer months.

Our community service program provides more than a framework for our students to give back in appreciation for all they receive themselves: it provides them with an opportunity to cultivate their own sense of goodwill and responsibility. We are very proud of our students for their deep commitment to their community.

Best wishes in the new year.
