High School

We offer our a rich, rigorous college preparatory curriculum designed to sharpen our students' study skills and critical thinking abilities, as they discover and develop their special interests and talents.

Students are untracked with the exception of native language designation and math, for which tracking is based on entering algebra preparation. Each required course is certified to fulfill one of the University of California's entrance requirements. Upon graduation, all Eastside students have at a minimum taken the necessary course work for admission to the University of California.

In addition to the core curriculum, Eastside offers a variety of electives, as well as sports:

College Preparation

Because the vast majority of our students are first-generation college-bound, we have developed a three-year college readiness series to make the college admissions process less daunting and the transition to college smoother.

Sophomores take "Math and Verbal Reasoning" which focuses on critical reading, verbal reasoning and analytical writing skills, improving their ability to communicate and organize arguments with logic and effectiveness.

Juniors take "College Readiness" which covers standardized test preparation, college research, and college essay writing. "Writing for College," our junior class English course, focuses on literary analysis, complex research, and multi-thesis writing.

Seniors take "Senior College Prep," which is taught by our college guidance counselor, and is designed to guide students through the college application process, from creating a list of desired colleges, writing personal statements, and applying for financial aid to managing personal finance and creating a resume that highlights academic, work, and extracurricular accomplishments.

Tutoring
Many of our students need additional academic attention in one or more courses in order to complete our college preparatory curriculum. Through a network of volunteer tutors from throughout the community students get the individualized support they need to graduate from Eastside and enroll in college. Tutors come to the Eastside campus at least once a week to meet with their students, and help with homework assignments and exam preparation. For more information on our volunteer tutoring program, please contact Helen (Koop) Kupka at 650.799.0262 or koop@eastside.org.
The High School Resource Program
All Eastside students have dedicated themselves to completing Eastside’s rigorous requirements and then enrolling in college.  Yet between 10 and 20% require extra support to improve their academic skills or develop study, learning and test-taking strategies. Eastside’s Resource Program helps to bridge these gaps, mentoring each student with a highly personalized plan and offering small math and humanities resource classes for students who need extra support to be successful in their classes.  In resource class, students gain confidence in their academic skills and address any learning disability or difficulties relating to second language acquisition. The resource teachers are committed to helping students master the skills required to succeed at Eastside. The program is structured to help students become increasingly independent as they approach their senior year in preparation for college.
