Students Enjoy Concert Celebrating
African American Composers

piano hands
On January 24, 2010, LaDoris Cordell and Jodi Gandolfi organized a wonderful concert at Eastside that celebrated the works of African American composers. Musicians included pianists LaDoris Cordell, Jodi Gandolfi, and Deanne Tucker, soprano Yolanda Rhodes, violinist Susan Brown, and cellist Victoria Ehrlich. We are especially grateful to the organizers for directing the donations collected at the door to Eastside’s music program.

Hewlett-Packard Helps Students Build Bikes
In September 2009, members of the Hewlett-Packard legal team came to Eastside with the materials needed to make a bike for each sixth-grader. The students and HP employees then worked side by side to build the bikes, finishing the day with a pickup soccer game and barbeque. We're thankful for the time and materials dedicated to this project as well as the financial support HP has provided to us.

Good Tidings Brings Access to the Arts:
athleticsThe Good Tidings Foundation partnered with Eastside to bring our middle school students to the LeRoy Neiman Art Center in San Francisco on a regular basis. During field trips students create watercolors, sculpture, paintings and quiltings. The middle schoolers got a special treat when they had a workshop with artist LeRoy Neiman himself (see the picture at right).

Click here to visit the Good Tidings Foundation web site for information on their important work helping students express creativity and individuality in such beautiful ways.

Students Tour Facebook Offices
In March 2009, Eastside students got a look at the inner workings of Facebook, thanks to Facebook employees Mark, Ari, Ben and Dave. The Facebook crew showed Eastside computer science students around their actual and virtual workspace. Eastside faculty Ryan Atkins noted a lot of positive outcomes from the field trip:athletics

The presentation was really eye-opening -- the way we share information with each other has truly changed in such a short period of time. On the way home, the students all talked about how they were definitely motivated to continue their study of computer science. It was a great opportunity for them to see a professional company environment first hand, and visualize a future in technology.
