Shaneka Julian wins Symetra Heroes in the Classroom award

Eastside Spanish teacher Shaneka Julian got a big surprise last month when she was presented with the “Symetra Heroes in the Classroom” award in front of her class.

Shaneka was honored for her dedication to her students and community, as she has been a beloved teacher at Eastside since 2000. Shaneka received a donation for classroom books and supplies as well as tickets to the October 6 home game against the Arizona Cardinals, where she was honored for her hard work. Congratulations Shaneka!

“Panther” staff honored by San Francisco Peninsula Press Club

At the end of the school year, the 2015-16 staff of our student newspaper, “The Panther,” won several awards from the San Francisco Peninsula Press Club. Out of 441 entries from schools around the Bay Area, Eastside students won the following awards:
  • 1st Place Sports Photo: Elizabeth Perez for a front page photograph of the girls basketball team defending the ball.
  • 1st  Place Sports Story: Vanessa Ibarra for a sports page story about the girls basketball season and victory.
  • 1st Place Editorial: Panther staff for an editorial calling for an end to “Drama” on campus
  • 3rd Place Editorial: Panther staff for an editorial alerting readers to gentrification
  • 3rd Place Opinion Columns: Isaac Olvera for three columns about Owen the Owl, respecting our cleaning staff, and gun control.
  • 3rd Place Features Photograph: Roberto Perez for a photograph of a blood donation drive
  • Honorable Mention — General Excellence: The judges commended “The Panther” for its “comprehensive and intelligent community reporting”
